Buying any type of car is a big step. Not only do you have to make a financial commitment, you’ve got to feel some emotion too. You’ll be using a car every day, so getting the right one is important to start with. There’s nothing worse than walking out to a motor that you don’t want to drive and that doesn’t want to be driven. Taking a test drive can reveal all and help you make that important choice!
Whether you’re set on buying a brand new car or a second hand one, the same principals apply. It’s all about feeling comfortable, in control and happy. While shopping for a used car online is an excellent way to save a lot of money, it’s actually seeing the car in person that’s a priority- only then do you get an idea of that kind of beast your dealing with.
When you see a potential purchase for the first time, take a good 5 minutes and give it a visual inspection. With used motors, look for signs of wear and tear, and especially rust. If there are and parts falling off or look in serious need of repair you should be suspicious. Take a look inside, and by all means get in there and make yourself comfortable by setting up your driving position preference. Check all the electronics, wipers, switches and dials. Basically don’t be afraid to get in there and poke around.
The all important test drive will tell you immediately if the car is for you. Start the engine and listen for strange noises. Take it easy with the gears and throttle, you don’t want to break anything and have to pay for it! Once on the road, the car should feel responsive and precise. If it’s steering is sluggish there could be a tyre or steering block issue. The transmission should be smooth and not make any clunking sounds. Sit back and really picture yourself owning the car. How does it make you feel?
Second hand motors really are bargains, but taking a test drive will allow you to see if it’s a winner or not. Give it a thorough going over and be out for at least 20 minutes. If all the documentation is there, and it feels good go for it. Remember it’s your money so you decide what to do!
